Hiking:

(Within 10 miles) Tumbledown Mountain, Angel Falls, The Appalachian Trail.
 

Fishing:

We are located on the Swift River. Within a few miles there are many other rivers and brooks which are great for fishing such as Garland Pond, Roxbury Pond, Beaver Pond and Tumbledown Pond. Also, we are only 25 miles from the Rangeley Lakes area.
 

Skiing:

Sunday River Ski Resort, located in Bethel, is one of the biggest ski resorts in Maine. It contains 126 trails descending from 8 interconnected mountains. Night tubing is also available. Sunday River is only a 45 minute drive from Coos Canyon. Saddleback Mountain is located in the Rangeley Lakes region, about a 45 minute drive from Byron. Saddleback has 40 trails which are covered in snow from November to April. Sugarloaf USA is located in Kingfield, about 1 hour away from Byron. It has 126 trails and glades, and offers above treeline skiing, serviced by the new Timberline Quad. Black Mountain of Maine is located in Rumford, only 20 minutes from Byron. Black Mountain offers 14 trails of downhill day skiing, night skiing, tubing, and cross-country skiing. Family fun at a low price.
 

ATVING and Snowmobile:

This is a great area for snowmobile and riding your ATV’S! Coos Canyon Cabins and Campground LLC is located on Rt. 17 snowmobile trail, which connects to ITS84, and many other excellent trails. ATV trails are maintained by two local clubs and you can access trails right from the campground.  Trails interconnect with trails to Mexico, Rumford, Andover, Weld, Rangeley, and Oquossoc. One of the biggest events in this area is the Rangeley Snodeo, which takes place in January.
 

Gold-Panning:

Panning can be done on the Swift River and the East Branch. If you are interested in the technique of panning there are several people in the area who teach these techniques. All equipment for panning can be rented at the campground store and other local area stores.

Sight Seeing:

No trip to this area is complete without visiting the Height Of The Land. This is a breathtaking lookout where you can view some of the area lakes and mountains. This is a great trip to take to view a sunset, or the fall foliage. Moose can often be seen along Route 17 on the way to Height Of The Land.
 

Antiques:

For those of you who like antiques, visit Yankee Gem's on Rt. 17 in Roxbury and Dingle Hill Antiques, just a minute walk from the cabins.

 

 



Bring your cameras! Not only is the country side picturesque, the area also has an abundance of wildlife. While visiting this area, it is not uncommon to see moose, deer, black bear, and many other wild animals.
